Birthday "Blow
out the candle, Face."
Face regarded the
cake with one small blue candle in the middle of it.
"Candle?
Singular?"
"Well, this is kind of your first
birthday." Murdock said. "Richard Bancroft's first birthday
anyway."
Face frowned. He'd liked the idea when Murdock
proposed celebrating his newly discovered 'real' birthday. But now
the day had come around he wasn't that bothered. It was just another
date on the calendar. Real it may be, but it just didn't feel like
his made up birthday felt. Though that didn't feel the way it used to
either. Felt... scarier.
"Face, you're like the Queen of
England. She has this 'official birthday', when a few hundred guys in
tall hats march around and then there's her actual birthday, when she
does all the normal birthday stuff people do."
"Eats
too much and gets drunk?"
"Well maybe not. But what
I'm saying is you could have one birthday where you throw a big party
for people you want to impress. And the other you can do whatever you
want with people you actually like." He smiled. "You know,
us."
Face smiled. He liked that. The question was, which
birthday did he use as his official one and which his real one? He
looked at the cake with the lonesome candle. Don't make a wish, make
a choice.
